Counting calories

Introduction

Calorie counting must be one of the most contentious topics on social media there is. I suspect that you can harvest all the opinions you can think of - here is another one!

To loose weight calories are important

To loose weight you will need to be in calories defecit. That is the energy that you consume will need to be less than the total energy your body burns every day over a long period of time. However, the reason for the swaths of opinion is that it is not that simple:

  • What is a calorie?
  • Everyone is different
  • Depends on where you are at on your fitness journey
  • Depends what calories you consume
  • Depends on what macros you consume
  • Depends what exercise you do in a day
  • Depends on your muscle mass
  • Depends on your weight history

Whenever things are difficult the best solution is keep it simple and be consistent.

The calorie count on your smart watch

If you are counting calories, do not subtract the numbers that your smart watch gives you for the calories burned for any exercise in a given day. I do not think that it works that way. Just count calories.
